Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has announced he is stepping down due to personal reasons.

According to the team, Sporting Director Guillermo Hoyos will assume head coaching going forward.

“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the Club all the best moving forward,” Mascherano said in a statement. “I have no doubt that the Club will continue to achieve success in the future.

“Sending you all a big hug, and thank you for everything.”

The reigning MLS Cup champions are off to a slow start in 2026. Through seven matches they are 3-1-3 and are coming off a pair of 2-2 draws to Red Bull New York and Austin FC.

Mascherano was hired in Nov. 2024 and led the Herons to its first MLS championship in club history last season. Inter Miami scored a total of 101 regular-season and postseason goals, the most in league history in 2025. They also reached the knockout portion of last summer's FIFA Club World Cup.
