Kylian Mbappé Scores 14th World Cup Goal To Pass Lionel Messi And Pelé On All-Time List

Kylian Mbappé scored his 14th World Cup goal on Tuesday — two more than Pelé and one more than Lionel Messi — to move the France forward into a tie for the third-most in tournament history.

Mbappé scored in the 66th minute of France’s World Cup opener against Senegal after having several good scoring chances denied earlier, including in the second half, by goalkeeper Édouard Mendy.

Mbappé doubled his total for the day with a stunning long-range effort in the fifth minute of stoppage time. With the goal, Mbappé is now tied with Germany legend Gerd Müller for the third-most goals in World Cup history, and moved past Olivier Giroud to become France's all-time leading goalscorer.

France held on to beat Senegal 3-1 in its World Cup opener. Bradley Barcola scored France's only other goal of the day.

Mbappé helped France win the World Cup in 2018 and reach the final in 2022, when he was awarded the Silver Ball as the second-best player. Joined up front by Désiré Doué and reigning Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, France went in as the co-favorite along with Spain.

Mbappé scored 25 goals this past season with Real Madrid.
