The New Orleans Pelicans will reportedly open a coaching search that includes interim head coach James Borrego as a candidate, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

Borrego had been an assistant coach with the Pelicans since 2023 until he was promoted to interim head coach when former head coach Willie Green was fired in November after a 2-10 start to the season. Borrego went 24-46 during his time leading the Pelicans this season.

Before Borrego joined the Pelicans, he was the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets for four seasons. He went 138-163 with the Hornets and helped the team make the Play In tournament during his final two seasons in Charlotte but the team never advanced to the playoffs under his leadership. The 48-year-old also served as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans Hornets, Orlando Magic and the University of San Diego before he coached in Charlotte.
