The Toronto Tempo is making big moves in free agency. According to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, one of the WNBA’s two expansion teams for 2026 opened up the wallet for guards Marina Mabrey and Brittney Sykes.
Mabrey and Sykes have agreed to two-year max contracts to form what potentially could be the first million-dollar backcourt with both deals worth at least $1 million annually.

The 29-year-old Mabrey joins her third team since 2023 after spending the past two seasons with the Chicago Sky and Connecticut Sun. The 2019 second-round draft pick, who was selected by the Tempo in last week’s WNBA expansion draft, averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4 assists in 35 games for the Sun last season.
In 2025, Mabrey hit 1,000 career field goals, 800 rebounds, 700 assists, and 200 steals.
Sykes, 32, spent last season with the Seattle Storm and the Washington Mystics. She played 39 games and averaged 11.8 points, 3.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game, which helped earn an All-Star for the first time in her career.
